Classroom Materials:

You are required to have a notebook for Biology notes only, pens, pencils, and an eraser.  If you need a pen, you may borrow one from the front of the room.  It may only be retrieved at the beginning of the period.  Please return at the end of the period.

Classroom Behavior:

The classroom is a place of inquiry, exploration, and discovery.  We respect all voices.

Do not interrupt when someone is talking.  Do not laugh at anyone’s ideas.  Constructive criticism is essential, destructive criticism must be left at the door.  Members of every experience must leave with their dignity in tact.

Maintain a Positive Attitude:

I will do everything I can to make this class interesting and relevant.  You need to meet me half-way by deciding that you will enjoy the class.  Be sure to participate in class by asking questions, answering questions, helping your lab partners, etc.  Success is 10% ability and 90% attitude.

Be here...but if you are not…

If you are absent, you have the number of days you were absent plus one to turn in any missed work.  If an assignment was due on the day your absence begins, that assignment should be handed in immediately upon your return.  It is your responsibility to retrieve your assignment from the Absent folder.  Tests/ quizzes are to be taken within 3 days of your return to school.   Make-up quizzes are administered during class time at the very beginning.

Come PREPARED:

Class begins as soon as the bell rings.  Therefore you should be in your seat, with your binder out, working on the “Do Now” for the day.  If you are not in your seat, you will be considered tardy.  Homework assignments are due at the beginning of the period .  If they are handed in after the beginning of the period, they are considered late and will be penalized 10% .

Classroom Procedures:

Non-verbal signals are important to a smooth and orderly learning environment and allow us to respect each other’s voices.

Raise ONE  FINGER if you’d like to add to the conversation or you have a question

Raise TWO CROSSED FINGERS  if you’d like to use the bathroom

(If you need to leave your seat, raise TWO FINGERS AND POINT to where you’d like to go)

Raise THREE FINGERS if you need me to come to you for help or you have a personal question or comment.

Food / Beverages:

This is a science laboratory.  Food is not permitted.  A water bottle may be brought to class and kept under your desk.  Consumption of beverages of any kind are not permitted on lab days while labs are in session.  You may request permission to use the fountain conveniently located just outside the classroom door.

Bathroom/ Locker:

Please visit your locker before/after class.  No passes will be issued to lockers.  If you need to use the bathroom, do not request while I am in the middle of instruction.

Cell Phones/ MP3s/ IPods, Gameboys, Walkmen, 8-Track Players,  :

According to SWMHS policy, students are not allowed to use these devices during the school day.  If you use these during class, they will be confiscated.

Grades:

Grades will be based on a points system.  You will calculate your grade by first adding up the total number of points you earn, then dividing by the total number of possible points.  You will earn points in the following categories:

Assignment

Weight

Assessments ( Classwork, Quizzes, LABS)

80%

Homework

5%

QUARTERLY ASSESSMENT

15%

In order to receive full credit, all homework, labs, and projects must be handed in on time.  Since homework will be reviewed in class, it will not be accepted late.  For projects and labs, 10% will be deducted from the assignment for each day it is late.

Retakes:

Always challenge yourself to learn from your mistakes.  You may retake assessments up to two days before your Quarterly Exam.  Retakes may only be taken after you have resubmitted the original assessment with clear corrections and explanations of  your mistake/misunderstanding of the concept.   Retakes will not be administered during class time.

Extra help:

Due to time constraints, your question may not be answered during instruction time.  Extra help and Retakes will always be available for students who request it by signing up on the Ms. Abdullah Appointment Sheet clipboard posted at the front of the room.  I am available after school from 2:15- 3:15 pm by appointment ONLY.      Note:  Respect the instruction time of the next class.   If your question cannot be answered immediately after class, please sign up for an appointment.

I have read this sheet on classroom procedures.  I understand it and will follow it.
