Welcome to English 10 CP!
Mrs. Scanielo
Course Objectives: English 10 CP is designed to continue the development of analytical reading and writing skills, heightening the awareness of structure and patterns in literature. Emphasis will be placed on close reading, accurate and efficient writing, speaking and engaging in the classroom setting, enhanced vocabulary proficiency, and elements of research. Selections of works, which will include short stories, Dystopian and World literature, Shakespeare, and Ancient and Greek Drama are read for content, form, and as a base for guiding all students towards mastery of the curriculum. There will be major projects utilizing technology and a final research paper. Speaking, listening, and integrating technology happens every day. English 10 CP adds to the educational foundation needed to prepare students for college and at the same time provides skills needed to be successful members of society.
Expectations: Students are expected to come to class prepared, on time, and be seated bell to bell. I will mark you late! Students are to possess a positive and respectful attitude. It is also expected that all students actively participate in the classroom, pay attention, and complete their assignments. There are to be no phones out in class. Meeting these expectations will result in student achievement throughout the year.
Extra Help/Missed Work: All you have to do is ask! Also, keep in mind that that almost everything covered in class is on Google Classroom. If you are absent, you can simply keep up by checking in online.
Grading: Everything counts in this class and follows the district grading policy. I use a point system which is easy to understand. For example, tests, major projects, multi-step essays are usually worth 100 points and writing assignments 50. Each marking period, there are at least eight assessments which are evenly distributed throughout and vary in category (test, quizzes, classwork, projects, performance writing). Homework can only be worth a maximum of 5% of the grade. Students are responsible for any missed work from absences and the work is to be completed within a timely manner. Late work is accepted, but points will be taken off. Writing is graded using rubrics recommended by the New Jersey Department of Education. My expectations are clear, rubrics are very straightforward, and current averages can be viewed on OnCourse at all times
