Course Description:

This course is designed to prepare students for general college science and mathematics courses.  Topics include concepts of algebra, algebraic functions and graphs, exponential and logarithmic functions and graphs, inequalities, and systems of equations.  Applications of algebra are emphasized.

Objectives of the Course:

The student will demonstrate through assessments, classwork, homework, and projects the ability to:

  1. interpret charts and graphs and discover the relationships among the variables involved.
  2. use various modes to present data and functions.
  3. perform basic algebraic manipulations.
  4. relate sentences to formulas, tables, and graphs.
  5. compute and describe qualitative rates of change.
  6. identify the mathematics characteristics of linear, exponential, logarithmic, power, and quadratic functions.
  7. apply mathematical principles to solving practical problems.

Materials Needed

  • Notebook/Binder
  • Laptop/chromebook
  • Folder
  • Pencil
  • Graphing Calculator- You can download a free graphing calculator on your phone (Physical calculators will be provided in class)

Class Expectations

1. RESPECT Respect your teacher, your peers and most importantly yourself.

2. NO ELECTRONICS! ABSOLUTELY NO CELL PHONES or HEADPHONES in the classroom.

  • 5 lates = 2 after school detentions
  • 10 lates= 1 Saturday detention
  • 15 lates= 1 In School Suspension
  • 20 lates= Loss of credit

4. ASK FOR HELP if you need it. Extra help is available if you need it.

Textbook

There are two textbooks that will be used for this course.

  • Functions and Change:  A Modeling Approach to College Algebra, which will have on-line access only through WebAssign
  • College Algebra, which will be available in class.
  • If material is not available on-line for assignments, students will be provided with paper copies of the work.

Grading

  • Grades will be based on the following:
    • Assignments (85%)
    • Quarterly Exams (15%)

▪         As per school policy, homework will not be given on Fridays or over breaks.

  • Students are responsible for making up any missed work within a timely manner. If the work is not completed it will result in a zero.
    • The number of days missed are the number of days you will have to complete the missing assignments. (If absent two days in a row, you will have two days to complete the work.)
    • If you are absent on a test/quiz day, you will take it the day you return.
    • If you are absent for a review day, and return on the day of the assessment, you will take the assessment the following day.
    • Points will be deducted for any assignments turned in late.
    • All parties involved in any cheating incident will receive a 0 and the assignment cannot be made-up.
    • Grades will be inputted as quickly as possible. Please allow time for larger assignments such as assessments and projects to be graded.

Students should be checking their grades on OnCourse weekly. If you have a question regarding your grade, please don’t hesitate to ask.
